Resources: State of Georgia TB Program
Budget Request: $300, 000
THE CASE TO SUPPORT THE
REQUEST:
1. Citing 2005 statistics, Georgia ranks 6th in the United States for TB case
numbers.
2. In the southeast Georgia ranks second in reported TB cases. Only Florida has
more reported cases.
3. In 2005, 504 TB cases were reported with the following counties reporting the
highest numbers: Fulton (88), DeKalb (79), Gwinnett (48), and Cobb (29).
4. Foreign-born persons accounted for more than 50% of cases in several health
districts, those were reported in Lawrenceville, Dalton, DeKalb, Cobb,
Gainesville, and Valdosta.
5. The annual estimated cost for traditional TB treatment:
- Latent TB minimum cost per
person $3,132
- Active TB disease
[uncomplicated] $5,397
- Active TB Multi-Drug
Resistance $200,000
6. The timely completion rate
of TB treatment for active cases in Georgia is 83%; that is just 8 out of every
10 persons who present for TB treatment finish the treatment regimen. This
completion rate is very low and increases the development to Multi Drug
Resistance TB.
7. Of contacts infected from exposure to TB cases only 63% complete their
preventive treatment.
8. Georgia’s 2004 TB budget eliminated a Physician and Nurse Specialist.
9. Georgia’s 2005 TB budget eliminated a Physician, Pharmacy Technician, and a
Program Associate.
10. The Proposed 2008 TB state budget likely will have further cuts.
11. The Federal TB budget, [as a result of Federal cuts], for Georgia was
reduced by $270,633 for the period FY 2004 through 2006.
